Easing into E-resources: CreativeBug

The Hidden Resource:
You may be familiar with many of the materials that you have access to at our library such as books, CDs, audiobooks, magazines, and DVDs. But are you familiar with the array of resources that are available electronically? Do you know what an electronic resource is? For those of you who are willing to take the journey into the vast world of electronic resources, this blog series is for you.
One of our best and most underused resources is CreativeBug – an online collection of video tutorials on a variety of craft projects. Using CreativeBug, you can learn how to crochet, knit, cross-stitch, embroider, sew, bead, or make a holiday-themed craft with your family. The possibilities are endless!
I’m a pretty crafty person – I’ve been crocheting consistently for the last 4 years, and I’ve recently picked up painting and cross-stitch. It’s fun to learn something new and see what I can create just by following a pattern. With CreativeBug, you have access to tons of free patterns and tutorials for your craft of choice.
Here’s a look at the different categories of classes available to you: -Sewing & Quilting
-Knit & Crochet
-Art: Mixed Media, Pottery, Drawing, etc.
-Holiday & Party
-Food & Home
All of these categories have select classes for beginners, as well as advanced tutorials for experienced crafters looking for a new challenge. Did you know you can even learn how to refinish and upholster home furniture? Like I said, the possibilities are endless!
You can add classes to “My Watchlist” so you can come back to them later. I have a couple of classes sitting in my watchlist just waiting for me to engage
with. So if you see a tutorial you’d like to try, but you just don’t have the time right now – add it to the watchlist and come back to it.
Calendar & Inspiration Feed
Another great feature in CreativeBug is the monthly calendar of live classes. You can view archived classes or register for upcoming classes and follow along with a live instructor. Carla Scott, a regular CreativeBug instructor has a few Knitting Technique classes coming up later this month – check out the calendar to learn more!
If you just want a pattern instead of a full tutorial, you can check out the CreativeBug Crochet/Knit pattern library or explore the user inspiration feed to see what other CreativeBug-ers are doing. And once you’ve made something, you can upload it to inspire other crafters!
Devices, Helpful Hints, and Tutoring
Life gets busy, and if you’re like me, you may feel like you’re constantly on the go. If you create a CreativeBug account, you can download the app on most devices to access patterns and tutorials anywhere with an internet connection. Just sign into CreativeBug using your library card number, then create your account (email address and password).
Need help? Book an appointment with one of the librarians here, or reach out to us at firstname.lastname@example.org or 208-459-3242. You can also watch the CreativeBug tutorial on Niche Academy if you want to learn on your own.
