Virtual Book Club
Since the state shut down and we started social distancing, book club gatherings have gone by the wayside. I miss the rich discussions in our monthly Thursday Afternoon Read club. Our members didn't always agree on the quality of a book, but I can't remember a meeting where we didn't laugh at least once. I just love hearing the different perspectives on a book's subject matter and having a good-natured argument. I definitely look forward to having those discussions in person again, but it looks like that might be a while.
Since we weren't able to have our regular discussion in April, and we can't gather together for the month of May, we will be having a virtual book club discussion on May 14 at 2 pm. The discussion will be held through Webex and can be accessed here: https://meetingsamer4.webex.com/meetingsamer4/j.php?MTID=m25386d0f7d0519aa0414b4233a7c57ec
Because we weren't able to distribute copies of May's book club pick (The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery), we will have a brief discussion about April's book (Wicked by Gregory Maguire). I know folks have very different opinions on this book - and as I've been reading through, I can understand why - which I think will make for an excellent discussion. But, because of the adult content in the book, this virtual book club will be for folks age 18 or older.
And since it's been so long since we've gathered together, I also think it's important for us to have an opportunity to discuss other books we've been reading. I know I've been able to listen to a plethora of audiobooks in the last month, and I'd love the opportunity to discuss them. (But I promise not to dominate the conversation.)
If you can't make it to this month's discussion, you can add your two cents about Wicked in our Goodreads group. If you didn't read the book, but you still want to talk about books, you can start a new discussion thread on our group as well. I'm excited to see what others want to talk about!
Want to talk about the books you've been reading, but are under 18? No problem! Join us for our next virtual discussion on June 11th at 2 pm. We will have an all ages discussion about the books we've been reading and what we loved and hated about them. We'll post the meeting link after our May discussion.
Itching to talk about books before the meeting? Leave a comment below to tell us what you've been reading and what you think about it (no spoilers, please!).
And, as always, if you have questions for us, please call or shoot an email our way.
We can't wait to see you all again!
